A laboratory of dither& cursor experiments
Move the cursor. Hold the mouse down. Double-click. Stay still. Type “dither”. Everything reacts.
Every visual on this page is the same trick told ten ways: a grid of cells, a number per cell, a palette of thresholds. No shaders, no libraries — just a loop and fillRect.

01 / BAYER 4×4A noise field pushed through an ordered-dither matrix. Your cursor is a heat source; the black lens stares back.
Metaballs
02 / ISO FIELDFour drifters and your cursor sum into one field. The iso-line flickers neon where the surface almost exists.
Halftone repel
03 / DISPLACEMENTA calm halftone sheet. The cursor shoves the dots aside and they grow angry and red near the wound.
Flow field
04 / VECTORSEvery stick rotates to orbit the cursor, swimming on a slow sine current when you leave.
Game of Life
05 / B3 / S23Conway’s rules on the house palette — cells age from navy to red before the grid eats them. Paint with the cursor.
Pixel sand
06 / GRAVITYA falling-sand automaton. Pour with the cursor; when the dune reaches the sky, the floor opens and drains it.
Interference
07 / WAVESClick to drop stones. Expanding rings pass through each other and dither where they collide.
Decode
08 / COLUMN SWEEPWords materialise column by column behind a ragged red static edge, hold, then dissolve into the grid.
Tuning
09 / SIGNALPure television snow. The cursor is an antenna: near it the noise locks onto a hidden picture.
Wanderer
10 / IDLE STATEWhat the big field does when you stop moving, kept in a jar. Click anywhere on his row to feed him.
The grid is the medium.
— dither lab, field notes
Banding is a failure of nerve. Given only a handful of colours, the honest move is to admit the grid and let the eye do the mixing. That’s all dithering is — and it still looks better than most gradients.
